Everybody is already pointing to the Lincoln Park boys as the de facto Class 4A Section 2 champion, but not if North Catholic has anything to say about it.
The Trojans (9-5, 5-1) traveled to Beaver on Tuesday night in a battle for second place in the loaded section, with the winner putting itself in prime position to challenge the Leopards for the section title. North Catholic led by one entering the final quarter, then used stifling defense to pull away for a crucial 66-57 win.
“I think what helps is that so many of our guys have played in such tense moments,” Trojans coach Jim Rocco said. “Our schedule has been really difficult. We went out to Archbishop Wood on the road and went toe-to-toe. We played Devon Prep and West Philadelphia and almost won. … I think these guys are seasoned because of that.”
Andrew Maddalon led the way with 24 points for North Catholic to go with 18 from Max Hurray. Sawyer Butler led four double-digit scorers for the Bobcats (11-2, 4-2) with 18 points along with 13 from Aiden Townsend, 11 from Brady Mayo and 10 from Ty Butler.
“Andrew Maddalon was awesome tonight,” Rocco said. “I thought he was going to score 40. I don’t know how many he had in the first half, but I don’t think he hit the rim.
“The first time [Hurray] scored might have been late in the third. He was struggling. He just wasn’t able to get any rhythm and score. But he played super well at the end of the third and fourth. He was strong at the rim and made a couple big shots.”
The Trojans have a must-see matchup with Lincoln Park Jan. 27 at home.
