Two members of Allegheny County Council, one currently serving and another who resigned in a failed bid for higher office, will serve on the county elections board for the 2023 election.

Tom Duerr, a Bethel Park Democrat who represents the 5th District, and Cindy Kirk, a McCandless Republican who previously represented the 2nd District, will join County Executive Rich Fitzgerald on the elections board. They were appointed on March 10 by Kim Berkeley Clark, the county’s president judge.

Fitzgerald is typically joined on the elections board by the two councilors elected on a countywide basis, Democrat Bethany Hallam and Republican Sam DeMarco III. But both Hallam and DeMarco face voters this year, and the county’s home rule charter doesn’t allow for candidates to also be on the board.

Duerr and Kirk will serve on the board until the November election is certified.
