Pittsburgh Regional Transit will spend $9.6 million over the next two years to replace underground storage tanks at eight locations throughout its system.
The authority board approved contracts Friday for general construction, plumbing, and electrical work involved in the project. Michael Facchiano Contracting Inc. was awarded the general contract for $3.7 million, Noralco Corp. the plumbing contract for $5.4 million, and Westmoreland Electric Services will do the electrical work for $494,250.
The work will involve removing concrete on the surface above storage tanks in eight locations and replacing the underground tanks. Separate tanks store a variety of substances that include fuel, oil, waste oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze.
The tanks were installed in the early to mid-1990s at maintenance garages in East Liberty, Collier, Ross and West Mifflin as well as other facilities in Harmar, South Hills Village, South Hills Junction and Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood. The new tanks are expected to last about 30 years.
