The Pittsburgh Union Progress has five stories that have been named finalists in the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s 59th Golden Quill contest.
This from just the first 2½ months of existence of the online publication, produced by workers on strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The journalists went on strike on Oct. 18, following the Oct. 6 strike of advertising, production and transportation workers at the PG.
The annual awards competition, which recognizes professional excellence in written, broadcast, photographic, video and digital journalism in Western Pennsylvania and neighboring counties in Eastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia, was open to journalism published and broadcast in 2022 by outlets of all sizes. Several of the PUP staffers also are finalists for work they did for the PG before the strike.
The winners will be announced at a May 30 dinner at Rivers Casino on the North Shore.
