About 75 people attended a trivia tournament and comedy show Saturday night at the Squirrel Hill Sports Bar where they helped raise more than $1,300 to benefit striking Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers.
Workers from five unions at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette began an unfair labor practice strike in October against the newspaper after its owners effectively stripped health insurance from a large number of union employees.
The Squirrel Hill fundraiser was the latest event to benefit the Pittsburgh Striker Fund, which is helping to keep the workers afloat financially amid the nearly eight-month work stoppage.
Mike Zydel, from the “WDVE Morning Show” and “Greenfield’s Finest Podcast,” headlined the comedy show, which also included comedians Ryan McBride and Chuck Lewis. Arnel Balcita, aka DJ AB, kicked off the benefit with team trivia.
The event also featured a 50/50 raffle and a chance auction, with numerous prizes donated by Squirrel Hill Sports Bar owner Barry White and a package donated by the Roberto Clemente Museum.
“We are grateful to Barry for his generosity and assistance in coordinating a very successful fundraiser, as well as everyone who made this event possible,” said Andrew Goldstein, Post-Gazette unit chair of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh. “Keeping our striker fund healthy is a key component of this strike as we continue to push ahead toward our ultimate victory.”
The PUP is the publication of the striking workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
