Members of the the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh — journalists Ed Blazina, Helen Fallon, John Santa and Randy Stoernell — handed out informational flyers about their strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday at, ironically, a job fair that, also ironically, was sponsored by the PG. That’s the employer with whom their union and four others have been unable to bargain fair contracts for what’s now nine months.
The Hiring Pittsburgh event was scheduled to last three hours. TNG members were able to stop and talk with about 70 to 80 people as they entered or exited.
Fallon said support for the strikers “lifted our spirits! Despite people heading into the job fair having troubles of their own, many of them stopped to chat and wish us the best. And it was especially heartening hearing those words from young people, the majority looking to find their first jobs.”
The PUP is the publication of the striking workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
