Pittsburgh announced Thursday that it is lifting most of the traffic restrictions for the 30th Street Bridge, which provides primary access to Washington’s Landing.

The bridge has had restrictions since late April while crews completed several aspects of a $1.84 million construction project. The project had been scheduled to last until October, but the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure said Thursday that enough of the project has been completed to lift the traffic detours except for occasional lane restrictions.

During the project, motorists had to use a single reversible lane on River Avenue to enter the island and a temporary traffic signal was installed at the River Avenue-30th Street intersection. Sidewalks also were closed in early July, forcing pedestrians and bicyclists to detour across the Herr’s Island railroad trestle at the southwest end of the island.

The project included installing a latex modified concrete overlay on the bridge deck, repairing sidewalks and railings and upgrading lights.

As of Thursday, motorists can get to the island from Route 28, the 31st Street Bridge and Rialto Street.

Some minor work will be done over the next few weeks, but the city said flaggers will direct traffic and delays should be minimal.
