When the 2023 high school football season kicks off Friday night, so, too, will the Pittsburgh Union Progress’s first season of complete high school football coverage.

Called to duty this past October at the start of the playoffs last season, the PUP had little time to get game-ready. Instead, it jumped right in with both feet and provided complete and in-depth football coverage without the advantage of game films or two-a-day practices over the course of a 10-week season.

This season is different.

The Union Progress sports staff went through the preseason drills. It has had time to get acclimated to the heat and study the play book. Now, like every team in Western Pennsylvania, it is ready to deliver.

This dedicated group of writers has produced the most complete preseason package of high school football stories and previews to be found. Every team in every conference in every class — from Aliquippa to Yough — has been researched and written about.

But the fun doesn’t stop there.

Beginning Aug. 25 with Week 0 games and continuing through the PIAA playoffs into December, the PUP will provide the latest game results and highlights every Friday night throughout the entire season. As a run-up to each week’s games, the Union Progress will have an in-depth football notebook, feature stories and Game of the Week.

Also, the PUP’s expert sports staff will compile its list of top teams from the WPIAL and City League with a weekly “Best in Show” rankings of the best teams in every class each Sunday.

But it all began in the summer with the rest of the high school football teams. A dedicated and driven PUP staff worked diligently to bring you the best preseason football information available and will not stop until the lights go out in December in Hershey. Turn back to the PUP every day this week as we continue to roll out a new class preview and feature story.
