The New Kensington Bridge, which has been closed for six weeks for repaving and other work, reopened Friday.

More work continues on the $24.6 million preservation project, but the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said this should be the last major disruption in traffic. The bridge, also known as the C.L. Schmitt Bridge, crosses the Allegheny River between East Deer in Allegheny County and New Kensington in Westmoreland County.

In addition to the bridge, 10th Street under the eastern side of the bridge in New Kensington has reopened. It was closed while crews for Swank Construction Co. were working on the bridge above it.

During the closure, the bridge deck was repaved and covered with a latex overlay, and expansion dams and bearings were replaced.

Motorists could experience intermittent weekday lane restrictions during steel repairs and painting that will continue through the end of the year. After a winter break, work will continue next spring and should be finished by fall 2024.
