“I have been a long supporter of fair wages and fair benefits for all workers and have been appalled at the inhumane treatment the PG workers have experienced.”
“Union workers have our backs and we have theirs.”
“As a longtime past reader of the PG, I’ve appreciated the news union members’ collective work for years, from news coverage to production. They know their craft and brought thoughtful news coverage to Pittsburgh readers before they took their strike action against the Blocks’ greed, and now they bring us community news through the PUP. I’m encouraged by all the community members who band together to support workers’ rights, show solidarity and bake.”
“The struggle is real, and we all have to help our neighbor, especially during the holidays.”
“The guild helped to assure that I was treated with on-the-job respect during my almost 30 years at the Post-Gazette. I want current and future PG employees to have the same protections.”
“I want to spread some joy.”
Those are just some of the comments shared by bakers who have signed up for the ’Tis the Season for Solidarity bake sale, Tuesday, Dec. 19, from noon to 6 p.m. at USW headquarters, 60 Blvd. of the Allies, Downtown. Proceeds from the fundraiser, sponsored by United Steelworkers Local 3657’s fundraising and organizing committees and USW District 10, will go to the Pittsburgh Striker Fund, which benefits the union members who have been on strike from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for more than 14 months.
Several baker’s dozens of supporters have signed up to participate. In addition to the sweet treats, there will be a raffle of gift baskets.
It’s not too late to join in the sweet solidarity. The event can still use bakers and volunteers to work at the sale and help with setup and cleanup. The sign-up sheet includes details on shifts, when to drop off items Monday night and Tuesday morning, and how to make arrangements for pickup.
The organizers also invite cooks to contribute dessert recipes to the “Seasoned With Solidarity Cookbook,” planned for early next year.
The PUP is the publication of the striking workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
