A Bethel Park team that had won just twice in the past month made what was about a four-hour drive to Hershey for their PIAA opener Friday.

And while those factors didn’t exactly set up Bethel Park for success, the Black Hawks made sure it was their sweetest trip home from a state playoff game in more than two decades.

Mike Mathias scored 22 points and Shawn Davis added 20 to lead WPIAL sixth-place finisher Bethel Park to its first PIAA playoff win since 2000 courtesy of a 59-45 triumph at District 3 runner-up Hershey in a Class 5A first-round game.

Bethel Park (14-13) had been 0 for 4 in first-round games since its last PIAA win, 39-37, against Hollidaysburg in a Class 4A first-round game in 2000. The Black Hawks had also lost five of their previous seven games, including a defeat to Shaler in the WPIAL quarterfinals and a 21-point loss at Fox Chapel in the fifth-place consolation game.

“I think we had a renewed interest after that last game,” Bethel Park coach Dante Calabria said. “We hadn’t won a state playoff game in so long. We said, ‘What’s wrong with going out there and winning one?’ And we went out and played one of our best games of the season and played with so much effort.”

Mathias made six of Bethel Park’s 10 3-pointers, including two in the third quarter that helped push his team’s advantage to 39-31 after three quarters. Davis scored eight of his points in the fourth quarter when the Black Hawks outscored Hershey, 20-14.

Logan Richards led Hershey (21-4) with 14 points and Derek Guzman chipped in 13.

Calabria, who is in his second season, won a PIAA playoff game for the first time since leading Blackhawk to the PIAA Class 3A title as a player his senior season in 1992. Calabria scored a game-high 33 points in Blackhawk’s 71-55 win against Strath Haven at Hersheypark Arena.

“I was teasing the kids before the game and told them that I was 1-0 in Hershey and that Wilt Chamberlain and I had combined to score 133 points there,” Calabria said with a laugh.
