West Mifflin residents will have to put up with the closure of a portion of New England Road for another month.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said Monday the road will remain closed between Camp Hollow Road and Route 837 through June because rainy weather has delayed drainage installation for a new bridge. The bridge is one of five under Trumbull Corp.’s $165.6 million contract to build a 2-mile section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway from Coal Valley Road in Jefferson Hills and just north of Camp Hollow Road near Curry Hollow Road in West Mifflin.
The posted detour for the project involves Route 837, Route 885 and the upper portion of New England Road.
The prep work began in March and was supposed to be completed by the end of last week. Rainy spring weather has delayed that part of the project, which now is expected to be done by the end of the month.
The southern section of the highway, from Route 51 in Jefferson Hills to Route 837 in Duquesne, is expected to be finished in 2028 at a cost of about $1.3 billion.
