This weekend’s traffic disruptions focus on Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s light rail system but also include regulars McKnight Road and the Parkway East.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit

A series of four weekend closures of stations on the Blue Line begin at 8 p.m. Friday at McNeilly Station, which will be closed until the start of service on Monday. The closure will allow crews to apply an epoxy coating to seal the concrete at the station platform to prevent water from seeping into it.

Riders should use Killarney or South Bank stations during the closure.

Similar closures are scheduled at Denise Station the weekend of Aug. 2, Memorial Hall Station the weekend of Aug. 9 and Boggs Station the weekend of Aug. 16. If weather cancels any of the work, that station will be rescheduled for the weekend of Aug. 23.

Other stations will receive the same treatment later this year, but dates haven’t been announced.

There also will be another disruption involving PRT vehicles: Sixth Avenue will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday while contractors excavate a portion of the street. As a result, bus routes 61A, B and C and 71B will be detoured.

The bus stop at Trinity Cathedral on Sixth Avenue will be closed during the work and a temporary stop will be added at Smithfield Street at Sixth Avenue until the work is completed.

McKnight Road

The highway will have a repeat of one of last weekend’s restrictions with traffic reduced to a single lane in each direction between Nelson Run Road and Braunlich Drive from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. The closure will allow crews to continue work on concrete beam repairs on the bridge that carries McKnight over the Evergreen Road-Babcock Boulevard interchange and perform concrete repairs along McKnight.

Motorists will have access to all businesses during the work.

The work is part of Lindy Paving Inc.’s $27 million project to improve the highway from Venture Street in Pittsburgh’s North Side to Perrymont Road in McCandless through next spring.

Parkway East

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction from the Business Route 22 exit in Wilkins to the bridge over Old William Penn Highway from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

Crews for Swank Construction Co. will be putting a latex coating on the bridge and doing other concrete replacement work as part of a $70.1 million project that will last until fall 2026.
