If you listen closely, you can hear the whistles blowing, sounds of pads popping and instructions being yelled. And that’s just coming from the Pittsburgh Union Progress newsroom.

High school football is upon us and the activity and anticipation of another season is spreading like wildfire. Teams from around Western Pennsylvania will kick off the 2024 season on Friday night, Aug. 23, and the PUP high school sports experts have been busy preparing almost as hard as the players themselves.

Beginning Sunday and continuing through Aug. 22, the PUP will publish daily in-depth preview stories and features, touching on every team in every conference in every classification. The City League and WPIAL Class 1A will get things started Sunday, with preseason coverage wrapping up Thursday with WPIAL Class 6A.

In addition to the team profiles, PUP’s expanded coverage also will include exclusive insight from Brad Everett on the 10 things he’s looking forward to seeing this upcoming season along with the PUP’s popular “Best in Show” rankings, a list of the area’s top-ranked teams beginning with the preseason edition Thursday and running weekly throughout the season.

So check back with the Union Progress Sunday and tune in weekly for the updated “Best in Show” rankings, along with the PUP’s Game of the Week, all-encompassing football notebook and feature stories throughout the week leading up to that weekend’s games. And every Friday night, make the PUP your source for the latest scores and highlights, and bounce right back Saturday mornings for special feature stories off of Friday night’s action.

It promises to be an exciting high school football season, and it all kicks off right here beginning Sunday.
