College students: Don’t have enough money for Steelers’ tickets?
Try the next best thing — a free Steelers Student Rush Watch Party Sunday that starts at 11:30 a.m. in Schenley Plaza in Oakland, courtesy of the team and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
The event will feature a big screen to watch the away game against the Atlanta Falcons, mini-golf and other yard games, giveaways, and an “energizing gameday atmosphere” complete with a DJ, according to a conservancy news release. Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes will also join in for a Steelers meet-and-greet.
Admission is free, making it accessible to all college students, according to the news release. While registration is not required, students are encouraged to RSVP to receive exclusive event updates and be entered in special prize drawings.
Several hundred students had already registered for the event as of midweek, according to conservancy leaders. Steelers marketing staff members spent part of the day Wednesday getting the plaza ready with decals and more.
Another bonus: College students can easily reach Schenley Plaza by taking advantage of free or discounted rides through Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s U-Pass program with their student ID.
The watch party is part of the Steelers Student Rush program, a signature initiative designed to engage the next generation of fans and strengthen connections with the college community in the Pittsburgh region, according to the news release and the Steelers website. Now in its second year, the program provides college students with unique opportunities to experience the excitement of Steelers football. The team held a similar event for college students last year outside Acrisure Stadium.
And if students really want Steelers tickets for the home opener, the one-of-a-kind program — according to the Steelers website — can give them that opportunity.
The Student Rush program will kick off in-stadium when the Steelers host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Acrisure Stadium.
In partnership with PogoSeat, the Steelers will provide college students access to standing-room-only tickets conveniently through text messaging for $50 and no additional fees. Complete details are available here.
The SRO tickets will be available to college students at every home game on a first-come first-served basis.
