Quarterback Jay’mere Ellis understood the perception surrounding his Penn Hills football team after it opened its season with three uncharacteristic consecutive losses.

“Everybody just counted us out,” Ellis said. “Everybody just gave up on us. They thought the first three games defined us. It really didn’t.”

The Indians proved that point Friday night.

Ellis threw for 121 yards, two touchdowns and an interception — while running back Naytell Mitchell rushed for 86 yards and a score — as Class 5A Penn Hills handed visiting Class 4A power Aliquippa its first regular-season loss in three seasons, 21-13, at Yuhas-McGinley Stadium.

“We’re back,” Ellis said. “The Hills is back. Don’t count us out.”

Penn Hills (2-3, 1-0) won its second consecutive game of the season, after dispatching of Fox Chapel, 54-0, a week ago.

Aliquippa (2-1), which won its record 20th WPIAL championship and fifth PIAA title a season ago, had its 27-game regular-season winning streak snapped Friday night. The Quips played without standout senior running back and Penn State recruit Tikey Hayes for the second game in a row.

Marques Council Jr. threw for 119 yards and a 13-yard touchdown to sophomore Larry Moon in the second half to pace the Quips offense.

Aliquippa running back Sa’Nir Brooks added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

“Our kids are just, they’re excited,” Penn Hills coach Charles Morris said. “They knew the energy was going to be up and the respect everyone in this locker room, players and coaches, has for Aliquippa. We just wanted to make sure we matched their energy and came out to play.”

Morris said the outcome of the contest, though, was definitely changed by the absence of Hayes.

“When you don’t have your top dog playing that’s always going to hurt,” Morris said. “Who knows how the game would’ve been when you’ve got your top rusher, your all-time rusher.

“But, I thought our defense played really well and our offense executed when they needed to.”

That was certainly true at the end of the first half.

Ellis connected with wide receiver Carter Bonner for an 11-yard touchdown pass with five seconds remaining in the second quarter.

“I saw that they brought the safety down,” Ellis said. “They blitzed the safety. We got one-on-one. I trust my receivers. My receivers trust me. I put the ball where they needed and he made a play.”

Penn Hills then took control of the game in the third quarter when Ellis completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Martel Palmer.

Mitchell then broke off a 56-yard touchdown run to hand the Indians a commanding 21-0 lead.

“It gives us a lot of confidence,” said Morris of the victory. “We always knew once our team started jelling, getting together, we could compete with just about anyone.

“We had a rough start and I thought it was just a chemistry thing,” he added. “Now everyone is starting to play their role and that’s turned into a few wins.”
