Lucas Stanley has had a memorable start to his senior season.
Friday, Stanley collected a triple-double to lead Union to a win.
And then on Saturday, this standout guard pumped in 35 points while leading the Scotties to an overtime victory.
Stanley’s huge point total allowed Union to defeat Blackhawk, 91-86, in the Ellwood City tournament.
It actually was the second 35-point performance in a row for Stanley, who had 35 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals in a 64-58 win against Ellwood City.
Union (2-0) trailed by three points after three quarters before rallying to tie the score, 82-82, at the end of regulation. The Scotties then posted a 9-4 advantage in overtime.
Landon Eckert also had a big outing for Union, as he finished with 28 points. Maddox Thompson added 12 and Jamel Mitchell had 11.
Tyler Heckathorn (30 points and 13 rebounds) finished with a double-double for Blackhawk (1-1), while Justin Shanor chipped in with 28 points and freshman Marco Fusetti added 14.
Other boys games
• Josh Jackowski poured in 27 points and Cam Epps had 20 to lead host South Allegheny (2-0) to a 69-58 win against Belle Vernon (0-2) in the MVI Shootout. Trevor Kovatch paced Belle Vernon with 20 points and Zion Moore tacked on 19.
• Michael Santicola’s 17 points helped Moon (1-1) register a 63-56 win against Knoch (0-1) at Geneva College. Moon led, 27-21, at the half. Amir Turner added 13 points and Carter Tumulty and Caden Kopay had 12 apiece for Moon, while Jackson Bauman led Knoch with 18.
• Chartiers Valley (1-0) opened its season with a 79-40 win against visiting Freeport (0-1). Julian Semplice paced the Colts with 17 points while Jayden Davis and Luca Federico tacked on 14 points apiece. The Colts began the game on a 27-7 run. Freeport got 20 points from Michael Graczyk.
• Jacob Dunkle’s 20 points helped Trinity (1-0) capture a 50-47 overtime win at Canon-McMillan (0-1). Trinity outscored Canon-McMillan, 9-6, in the extra period. Jonah Williamson chipped in 12 points for Trinity, while Roman Koenemund led Canon-McMillan with 22 points.
• A day after scoring his 1,000th career point, Owen Dumbroski registered a team-best 23 points in helping Serra Catholic (2-0) take down McKeesport (0-1), 64-55, in the MVI Shootout. Serra outscored McKeesport, 24-11, in the first quarter. Lamont Perkins led McKeesport with 26 points.
• Ralphie Blundo knocked down four 3-pointers among his team-high 20 points to lead New Castle (1-0) to a 70-42 win against visiting Nazareth Prep (0-1). New Castle also got 16 points from freshman Kai Cox and 14 from Damian Harrison. Will Evans paced Nazareth Prep with 21.
• Ringgold, which won just four games last season, improved to 2-0 following a 68-60 win against Brownsville (0-2) in the MVI Shootout. Szyair Dungee led Ringgold with 18 points and Demetri Lowe added 16. Ringgold trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter before outscoring Brownsville, 22-13, in the final frame. Jaiden Praster led Brownsville with 21 points.
• AC Corfield scored 16 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to help South Side (1-1) grab a 75-73 win against Hopewell (1-1) in the South Side tournament. Carter Wilson chipped in 25 points for South Side, while Zach Kovell led Hopewell with 23.
Girls games
• In a showdown of defending WPIAL champions, Erica Gribble scored 27 points and Jayla Peterson added 25 to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (1-0) to a 64-44 win against North Catholic (0-1) in the North Allegheny tournament. Greensburg C.C. held a four-point halftime lead before outscoring the Trojanettes, 19-6, in the third quarter. Brady Wehner paced North Catholic with 12 points.
• Payton Collins made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Mt. Lebanon (1-0) to a 60-43 win against Blackhawk (0-1) in the North Allegheny tournament. The score was tied, 22-22, at the half before Mt. Lebanon held a 23-12 scoring edge in the third quarter. Elizabeth Twyman added 14 points for Mt. Lebanon, while Aubree Hupp led Blackhawk with 23.
• Canon-McMillan (1-0) used a strong fourth quarter to edge host Chartiers Valley (0-1), 43-40. The Big Macs trailed, 28-26, before outscoring Chartiers Valley, 17-12, in the fourth quarter. Faye Saunders led the Big Macs with 14 points. Rachel Boehm paced the Colts with 12 points.
• Ryan Oldaker scored a game-high 23 points and Juju Leroux contributed 15 to propel three-time defending WPIAL Class 5A champion South Fayette (1-0) to a season-opening 70-38 win against Altoona (0-1) in the North Allegheny tournament.
• Clairton star Iyanna Wade began her senior season by scoring 42 points while leading the Bears (1-0) to a 56-34 win against Gateway (0-1) in the Play 4 Mae tournament at Woodland Hills. A two-time WPIAL scoring champion, Wade now has 2,191 career points.
• Rosalia Varlotta scored 17 points and Vange Balouris added 13 to vault host North Allegheny (1-0) to a 55-29 win against McKeesport (0-1) in the North Allegheny tournament. McKeesport was led by Emily Eisenberg’s 11 points.
• Karis Thomas scored 18 points and Cassie Sauer added 14 as defending WPIAL Class 3A champion Shady Side Academy (1-0) opened the season with a 56-19 win against Belle Vernon (0-1) in the Play 4 Mae tournament at Woodland Hills.
• Alayla Bivins scored a career-high 24 points and Oakland Catholic (1-0) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Imhotep Charter (0-1). 49-44, in the Play 4 Mae tournament at Woodland Hills. The Eagles held a 30-14 scoring edge in the second half.
• Taylor Schumacher scored 26 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead McGuffey (2-0) to a 65-40 win against Avella (1-1) in the Avella tournament. The Highlanders also got 10 points from Lexi Ewig.
• Abby Cleary’s 19 points helped Montour (2-0) remain unbeaten courtesy of a 51-28 win against Quaker Valley (0-2) in the Montour tournament. Montour outscored Quaker Valley, 31-11, in the second half. Tiffany Miller added 11 points for Montour, while Mimi Thiero led the Quakers with 17.

*** — Jayden Iorio, Laurel. Iorio scored 27 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to push host Laurel (2-0) to a 65-45 win against Perry (0-2) in the Laurel tournament.
** — John Anderson, Propel Montour. Anderson knocked down seven 3-pointers among his game-high 29 points, but visiting Propel Montour (0-1) fell to Burgettstown (1-0), 68-59.
* — Kaylee DeAngelo, Thomas Jefferson. DeAngelo (six 3-pointers) was deadly from behind the arc and scored a game-high 20 points to lead Thomas Jefferson (2-0) to a 76-19 win against Knoch (0-2) in the Montour tournament.
