In his decorated four-year career from 2019-23, Vinnie Cugini became the WPIAL’s all-time leading scorer while putting Aquinas Academy boys basketball on the map.

Now, thanks to players such as Jake Guillen, the foundation laid by Cugini is being carried over into the next chapter

A three-year starter who is one of the only remaining players who played alongside Cugini and the Crusaders, Guillen scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter to propel Aquinas to a 94-67 victory against visiting Waynesburg (0-5) Friday night in a non-section showdown. With his final free throw late in the fourth quarter, Guillen joined Cugini as the second player in school history to reach 1,000 points in his career.

“It was special,” Crusaders coach George Yokitis said. “We had such a nice student section. Jake is an all-basketball, all-the-time-kind of kid and a great student. It was nice to see so much of the student body of our little school be there. They had like 50 of the big heads going.

“He’s a good kid. He really deserves it. He works very hard on his game, and it’s nice to see it come to fruition for him.”

The lopsided win for Aquinas (5-1) actually appeared to be in jeopardy for a moment when Waynesburg cut the deficit to four early in the fourth quarter. But that’s when Guillen caught fire, and his teammates did everything they could to feed him while he had the hot hand down the stretch.

“They were really trying to stop him,” Yokitis said about Waynesburg. “They had like four guys on him, because they knew. A couple kids said, ‘We’re not letting you get 1,000.’ That’s what they should do.”

Sam Duer had an outstanding game in his own right for the Crusaders, finishing with 28 points while David Zaharko chipped in with 12. Cole Headlee led the way for Waynesburg with 22 points to go with 14 from Dame Woods, 12 from Alex Eck and 10 from Austin Surber.

“It was remarkable how Sam wanted to see Jake get those points,” Yokitis said. “He must have had five steals in the last few minutes of the game. … Sam is a very good player. He’s about the best pure shooter we’ve ever had. And he’s very athletic.”

After Guillen converted a free throw to reach the 1,000-point milestone, the game came to a brief halt as the Crusaders unveiled a ceremonial banner and commemorative basketball for Guillen with the number “1,000” written on it. Yokitis said the school’s boosters in charge of the festivities joked that they already had plenty of practice organizing ceremonies like this, thanks to Cugini and his high-scoring exploits.

“We had all this planned with a nice ball and a banner,” Yokitis said. “We didn’t know he would get 29, because it’s hard to get 29. Then he only had 7 [at halftime], so we had written that off. Then our next game is at Summit, and I said, ‘That would be too bad if he gets it on the road.’

“I give credit to those kids. They were determined to stop him.”

Now riding a five-game winning streak after a season-opening loss to Avonworth while averaging 84.6 points per game, Aquinas is maintaining its high-scoring ways even with Cugini no longer around. And with players such as Guillen and Duer leading the way, there’s a chance this could be the Crusaders’ most well-rounded team yet in Yokitis’ seven-year stint as head coach.

“That was a lot of fun for us. The kids have come so far,” Yokitis said. “It’s so nice to see the other kids care about it and be so supportive of their classmates. And you could tell, it was so genuine. It was like we were playing for the WPIAL championship or something. It was really nice to see.”
