In a showdown of undefeated teams, Baldwin’s leading scorer was surprisingly quiet in the first half Tuesday.

Nate Wesling, one of the top guards in WPIAL Class 5A who entered the night averaging 20 points per game, was limited to just three in the opening two quarters as his Highlanders trailed host Peters Township at the half.

“I told him that we needed him to step up and be the player that he is,” Baldwin coach Jeff Ackermann said. “And he came out hot. And once he got going, he was cooking.”

So much so that he helped Baldwin cook up a big road win.

Wesling scored 21 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead Baldwin to a 56-49 win at Peters Township in Class 5A Section 3.

Baldwin (6-0, 1-0), a WPIAL Class 6A finalist a season ago, trailed Peters Township (5-1, 1-1), 19-18, at the half before using a 15-8 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take a 33-27 lead. Wesling tallied nine points in the third and added 12 more in the fourth.

Caden Cherico and Max Marzina added 10 points apiece for Baldwin. Dylan Donovan led Peters Township with 21.

“It’s a big win,” Ackermann said. “At Peters, that’s a place where most teams aren’t going to win. That’s a very good team and a great program. We respect them a lot. But we were not scared of them and we wanted to make sure we were trying to match their physicality and their intensity, and I thought we did that.”
